The Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival runs July 14 to 25, 2027, twelve days of theatre staged through the Exchange District, and the festival has those dates posted on its own site. That is the easy half of the answer. The half that catches a first-time visitor is that nobody can tell you in advance which of the hundreds of performances are good, because the festival is built so that nobody knows.

A draw picks the shows, not a programmer

The Winnipeg Fringe is non-juried. Companies apply, a lottery decides who gets a slot, and there is no artistic director reading scripts and deciding what has earned a stage. The 2027 entry deadline falls in November 2026, with the draw in early December, so the lineup people will be arguing about next July was settled by chance seven months before opening night. Artists pay a flat registration fee instead of splitting the gate, and they keep their box office. For a visitor that has one practical consequence: a touring solo act with ten festivals behind it sits in the same program, at the same price, as a company's first attempt at anything, and the one-paragraph blurb gives you no way to sort them.

So the sorting happens during the run. Audience star ratings start appearing partway through, which means the shows that are working are identifiable by the second week and also harder to get into by then. A first visit tends to go better booked that way round: one show picked from the blurb on the first night, the rest left open until the ratings are up. The 2026 edition ran 164 Canadian and international companies, which the festival calls the second largest independent Fringe in North America, so there is no shortage of second choices.

What a ticket costs and where to buy one

In 2026 advance tickets ran $12 to $14 with a $2.50 service charge on each, sold up to four hours before a performance started. After that the only way in was at the venue door, cash only, $10 to $14, and anyone 25 or under paid $10 there. The printed program listing every show and venue was $10. Programming at the Kids Venue was priced lower, on a pay-what-you-can basis at the door. Advance sales run through the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre box office at 174 Market Avenue, which makes sense once you know the Royal MTC founded the festival in 1988 and still produces it. None of those are 2027 numbers; the festival sets its prices each spring.

The outdoor site costs nothing at all. Old Market Square, at 275 Bannatyne Avenue in the middle of the venue cluster, runs free music, comedy and street performance from noon to midnight every day of the festival, with food and merchant vendors around the edges. You can spend an entire evening there without buying a ticket, which is also the fallback when the show you wanted sells out. Mid-July helps: the sun does not set in Winnipeg until after nine, so the outdoor stage plays most of its day in daylight and the indoor venues are where you go when the brick and the afternoon heat get to be too much.

Where to stay for Fringe

Our three-bedroom home is in Crescentwood, southwest of downtown. Portage and Main is a nine-minute drive, 3.9 km, and the RBC Convention Centre is seven minutes and 3.0 km, which puts the Exchange District venues at the far end of a short drive rather than a walk. On transit, the D19 Corydon runs downtown to its terminal on Kennedy Street just south of Portage Avenue; the fare is $3.45 in cash or $3.10 with a peggo card. Corydon Avenue is about ten minutes on foot, south, if you would rather eat near the house than downtown before an evening show.

Fringe falls in the middle of Winnipeg's festival stretch, when Folk Fest, Folklorama and the Fringe land within a few weeks of each other and the whole city's accommodation tightens. July weekends go first. Our listing is here if you want to look at dates.
