We now have a smart TV in every bedroom. This was not our first plan for the house. We originally wanted bedrooms to stay fully screen-free so each room felt as quiet as possible.

After hosting more groups, we changed direction. Many guests arrive after a long trip to Winnipeg, and the house sleeps up to six people. In groups that size, people usually want different downtime at different times.

What changed our minds

We kept hearing the same pattern. One person wanted to read in silence, one wanted to watch a show, and someone else wanted to take a call or go to bed early. A single shared TV in a common area did not always work for that mix.

Hosting decision: We kept bedroom layouts simple and calm, then added smart TVs so each guest can choose quiet time or screen time without affecting the rest of the group.

How this helps groups of six

When six people share one home, personal space matters. Bedroom TVs give each person a place to step back for an hour, watch their own content, or wind down on their own schedule.

  • Couples can split evening plans without moving furniture or negotiating one screen.
  • Early sleepers can go to bed while others keep using shared spaces.
  • Kids and adults can watch different programs in separate rooms.
  • Guests with jet lag can rest with low-volume viewing in their own room.

What we kept from the original idea

Adding TVs did not mean dropping the quiet-room goal. We still set up bedrooms for rest first: comfortable bedding, simple decor, and enough space to unplug. The TVs are an option, not the centrepiece of the room.

Why this fits our hosting approach

We treat amenities as practical tools, not just add-ons. For this home, the practical need was clear: groups travelling long distances need flexible downtime once they arrive. Smart TVs in each bedroom solved that without changing the calm layout of the house.

For future guests: If you are travelling as a family or group of friends, everyone can now choose shared time in the living area or private downtime in their own room.
